Alessia Cara Drops Wes Anderson-Inspired 'Not Today' Video
Alessia Cara is going through all the heartbreak feels in the new music video for her single "Not Today," released Tuesday (Nov. 27).
Instead of pretending she’s all right and burying her feelings, Cara embraces the pain of her breakup and confronts her emotions head on in the new video. She brings her heartbreak to life as she attempts to go through the motions of her day, wallowing in her bed, faking a smile in the mirror, and even trying to complete an enormous jigsaw puzzle on her own. With mascara running down her tear-stained face, she waits for the "one day the thought of him won’t hurt the same."
If certain scenes in the video are giving you déjà vu, Cara revealed in an Instagram post that the video’s stylistic approach was inspired by Wes Anderson’s films. "I wanted to throw in some references to his movies," Cara said. "See if you can catch them."
The "Not Today" video underscores the song’s powerful statement of not rushing through your feelings and knowing that a better day will eventually come, reflecting the growing maturity in Cara’s new music. The video comes just ahead of Cara’s release of her highly anticipated second album, The Pains of Growing, which will be released on Friday. In addition to "Not Today," the 15-track album also includes her already-released songs "Trust My Lonely" and "Growing Pains."
