For over three decades, Kardinal Offishall has stood at the intersection of music, culture, and leadership — an artist whose influence extends far beyond the stage and into the very fabric of Canadian identity. Born Jason Drew Harrow in Scarborough, Toronto, to Jamaican immigrant parents, Kardi has built one of the most remarkable and multifaceted careers in music history, earning his reputation as Canada's undisputed Hip-Hop Ambassador. Kardi began rapping at eight years old and was winning competitions by twelve. At fourteen, he performed live on stage with Nelson Mandela in attendance during Mandela's historic first visit to Toronto following his release from prison. By 1993, inspired by the great 17th-century French statesman Cardinal Richelieu, he adopted the moniker Kardinal Offishall and co-founded The Circle — a collective of artists including Choclair, Jully Black, Saukrates, and Solitair that would become the nucleus of Toronto's hip-hop renaissance. His 1997 debut album Eye & I was a critical revelation — blending soul, dancehall, reggae, and hip-hop in ways that had never been heard from a Canadian artist. A year later, he was featured on The Rascalz' "Northern Touch," widely considered the anthem of Canadian hip-hop and a watershed moment that proved the country could compete on the global stage.Kardinal's artistic DNA has attracted an extraordinary roster of collaborators. His catalogue features work with Rihanna, Drake, Lady Gaga, Busta Rhymes, Ludacris, T-Pain, Black Thought (The Roots),Buju Banton, Idris Elba, Glenn Lewis, Daniel Caesar, Vybz Kartel, Pharrell Williams, Keri Hilson, Estelle, and Konshens. He co-wrote Lady Gaga's debut smash "Just Dance," earning a Grammy nomination. His music has been featured on a Dave Chappelle Netflix comedy special, and he authored the Toronto Raptors' official 2019 NBA Championship theme song "Run." He has toured extensively across the USA, UK, Germany, France, Dubai, China, India, the Caribbean, Spain, Malaysia, Greece, Lebanon, Romania, and many more — bringing Toronto's sound to stages on five continents.In 2026, Kardinal prepares to release Everyday, Sometimes — a new EP featuring an extraordinary lineup of collaborators: T-Pain, Black Thought, Glenn Lewis, Buju Banton, Idris Elba, Nesta, and Konshens. The project coincides with the 25th anniversary of Firestarter and a 22-day residency in Toronto during the FIFA World Cup 2026 — a once-in-a-generation moment for the city and the artist who helped define it.
