On paper, Shareef is as cocky as you'd expect a 20-year-old athlete fresh out of conquering high school to be. The Toronto-born Sudanese hip-hop artist, affectionately known as Currly, is unapologetic in his quest for expression despite the pressure of newfound TikTok virality. Almost a million social media followers later, it's clear why Shareef's confidence is innate on and off stage.Shareef started creating music as a way to connect with friends by passing around verses and freestyling over beats. He took inspiration from his favourite artists such as Juice WRLD, XXXTENTACION, Kanye West, and Kid Cudi. Living between Sudan and Canada also gave him a wide range of influences which a musically-inclined household helped foster. Fast-forward to his first performance at a Sudanese festival where an exuberant crowd received him, and Shareef knew he had a talent on his hands. The increased demand for new music at home and abroad only cemented that. Then, his videos blew up on TikTok.Shareef's presence was immediately felt on the Gen-Z-dominated app, especially by Sudanese people worldwide. He started making videos during the pandemic to pass the time with friends but didn't realize he was posting publicly until his videos quickly gained traction. Using popular trends and catchy beats, he effortlessly drew in a highly engaged audience of over 800,000 followers and amassed almost 25 million likes. Being able to connect with genuine supporters and represent his country was an unexpected bonus, but it's a responsibility he takes seriously since there's so little Sudanese representation in popular media. Shareef aims to use his burgeoning influence to rebuild his community back in Sudan and put Toronto on his back.Shareef's noble intentions are in humorous contrast to his music which he calls "unseriously serious". Over addictive beats, he quips about life, relationships and whatever else comes to mind. Inspiration comes from all aspects of his life but he's not one to force anything. Imagine if your funniest friend in the group chat had a mic, nimble one-liners and the bravado of a seasoned performer, that's Shareef. You can't help but join in the fun. On his first-ever single release via Universal Music Canada, Shareef comes out the gates swinging on "OMG! Freestyle".
