POESY Releases Unapologetic New Single "Strange Little Girl" Today 10/19
POESY unveiled her anticipated brand new single "Strange Little Girl" today via Big Machine Records. The track features a stadium-sized, production with anthemic vocals often compared to Florence Welch (Florence and the Machine), an altogether ostentatious sound for POESY. The lyrics see POESY unified and spirited, her stark honesty providing insight into her own internal struggles with being pigeonholed and classified.
Of "Strange Little Girl" POESY shares, "Strange Little Girl was born out of my own frustrations and the fear of being misunderstood or wrongly categorized, but it grew into something much larger and more unifying - it’s a song and a story that I know will really bring people together, despite their differences. I’m so excited to release it beyond the small circle of my team and send it out into the big wide world because I think now more than ever, it’s an important message for us to hear, especially for young women."
"I wanted to write something that reclaimed all of those parts of ourselves that we might be embarrassed about or ashamed of - all the things that make us strange - and show that it’s okay to fail, it’s okay to be yourself, and more than that, it’s okay to love yourself in a really unapologetic way," commented POESY. "It’s about being a three dimensional person, which is somewhat of an overlooked luxury for women. The chorus asks: ‘do you like me now that the light’s on?’ but by that point in the song, you don’t give a fuck if they like you, because you don’t need anyone’s approval except for your own."
As the season one/week four chosen artist of CTV’s The Launch, POESY debuted at #1 on the iTunes All Genres chart with "Soldier Of Love" earlier this year - captivating audiences with her soaring vocals and extraordinary talent. POESY’s performance and live interpretation of the song drew comparisons to powerful rock front-women and set the stage in Canada for a new alternative voice to be heard.
Quickly becoming one of the most exciting new Canadian voices and influenced by innovative enigmatic artists like Kate Bush and Freddie Mercury, as well as 90s alternative rock queens PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, and Alanis Morissette, the Toronto-based singer-songwriter has formed a gritty and unmistakable sound that demands to be heard. Pairing inspiration from her favourite novels with vulnerable confessions from her own life, POESY’s dark and powerful alt-rock rhythms makes it possible to dance and cry and wonder and hope all at once.
Most recently POESY joined forces with award-winning acclaimed producer and now-artist manager, Gavin Brown (Metric, Three Days Grace, Billy Talent) to build on her sound and artistic vision. The pair has been working on an eclectic, intensely emotional body of work to be released soon.
"From the cold spring afternoon that I wrote Strange Little Girl, I knew it had to be the first song out of the gates because it took on a life of its own," said POESY. "I can’t wait to see where it goes and to eventually meet all the strange little girls (and boys) who love it. I have nearly a whole album’s worth of material built up and I really believe that there’s a track in there for everyone — the people who love to dance, the ones who need a song to have a good cry to, and the people who want to feel on top of the world — and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it."
